The single-session custom-made orthotic, and why it is different

Most custom-made orthotics are made the same way. You are assessed, an impression of the foot is taken, and the mould is sent to an outside laboratory. A few weeks later you return for a second appointment to collect the finished device and have it adjusted. At the foot atelier in Central, the process is different: the scan, the manufacture and the fitting all happen in a single visit.

What a custom-made orthotic actually does

An orthotic is a support placed inside the shoe. A good one is shaped to your foot and to the way you stand and walk, so that load is spread more evenly and pressure is taken off the places that hurt. Off the shelf insoles cushion, but they are not built to your foot. A custom-made orthotic is measured, made and corrected for you.

The usual two-visit lab model

In the standard model the podiatrist takes a cast or a scan and sends it away. The laboratory builds the device and posts it back, and you come in again to have it checked. It works, but it means two appointments, a wait of one to three weeks, and less control if something needs changing, because the maker is not in the room with you.

One visit, from scan to fitting

The single-session approach keeps every step under one roof. Your posture and gait are assessed first. A three dimensional scan captures the shape of each foot. The orthotic is then moulded and finished on site, then fitted the same day, with any correction made while you are still there. You walk out wearing them, and you feel how they change your stance before you leave.

Doing it this way has real benefits. There is no second trip across town, which matters for busy people and for visitors passing through Hong Kong. Adjustments are immediate, so a hot spot or an odd feeling can be corrected on the spot rather than at another appointment weeks later. And because the person who assessed you is the person making the device, the intent behind the prescription is not lost along the way.

Who it helps

People come in for many reasons: heel pain, forefoot pain, flat feet, a difference in leg length, sports load, or simply long hours on hard floors. Orthotics are not the answer to everything, and part of the first visit is an honest conversation about whether they will help you and what else might. Where they are the right tool, having them made and fitted in one session is a more direct way to get there.

What to bring

Bring the shoes you wear most, so the orthotics are matched to real use rather than an ideal. Allow enough time for the assessment, the scan and the fitting in one sitting. If you are not sure whether orthotics are right for you, a consultation is the place to start.
